The Schipperke * ( pronounced "Skipper-Key" ) is a small breed of dog, generally weighing under 2O lbs. Unfortunately, the exact origin of the breed was not documented. It is believed that the breed originated in Flanders and the provinces of Antwerp and Brabant, Belgium.

Known history of the breed begins in 169O. Shoemakers in the St. Gery quarter held competition exhibitions in Brussels. The shoemakers fashioned gleaming collars from hammered or carved brass for their dogs to wear on these special occasions.

As for breed's name, "Schipperke", it is reported that it's origin came from the boat captains who sailed between Brussels and Antwerp. "Schip" is the Flemish word for boat, thus the breed was given nicknames which related to a boat dog: "little boatman" and more commonly heard in America: "little captain". According to the breed's history, there were actually more Schipperkes throughout towns in Belgium kept in the home as family pets. In this area, it is reported that the Schipperke was thought to be more like a small shepherd breed. From this, the nickname " little Shepherd" is believed to have it's origin.

The first Schipperkes were brought to America in 1889. The breed was first registered in the American Kennel Club Stud Book in 19O4. At this time, they were shown in the Miscellaneous Classes. As the breed grew in popularity, the American Kennel Club officially recognized the Schipperke breed .

The American Kennel Club adopted the Schipperke Club of America's current Breed Standard on November 13, 1990.

The Schipperke is listed and shown in the Non-Sporting Group.

Despite their size, they are truly a big dog in a small package.

Schipperkes are alert, inquisitive, and have an endless source of energy!
